Series: Black Tide Rising

John Ringo's zombie apocalypse is caused by a deliberately-engineered virus, apparently made by an amateur or at least a lone wolf. Dunno if finding that person and understanding why it happened is going to be part of the story; I kind of think not, though in the first book they did trace it down to one person.

The Smith family gets lucky and has some advance notice, from relatives. They activate the families zombie apocalypse survival plan and move onto a sailboat. Not too bad an idea, really.

And, after a while, they start rescuing people from other ships (clearing the zombies), and form Wolf Pack. And get into touch with the remaining US government, even.
